骑虎难下的典故

东晋成帝的时候，大臣温峤组织了一支联军去讨伐叛乱的***。在战争的初期，有几路联军连连失利，军中粮食也快用完了。

这种境况很让主帅陶侃着急，他生气地对温峤说：“你动员我来时，说一切都已安排妥当，现在交战不久，军粮就快完了，如果不能马上供应军粮，我只有撤军。”

温峤对陶侃说：“自古以来，要想打胜仗，首先得内部团结。现在我军虽然乏粮，处境困难，可如果马上撤军，不仅会让人耻笑我们，而且也会使叛军更加嚣张。我们目前的处境，正如骑在猛兽的身上，不把猛兽打死，怎么能够下得来呢？咱们只有一鼓作气坚持到底呀！”

陶侃接受了温峤的劝说，率军奋勇杀敌，终于打败了叛军。

温峤劝说陶侃的“骑猛兽安可下哉”一句话，后来演变成了成语“骑虎难下”。表示事情发展到一定程度想要停下来已经不可能，因而骑虎难下也含有进退两难的意思。
