合浦珠还的典故

东汉时，合浦郡沿海盛产珍珠。那里产的珍珠又圆又大，色泽纯正，一直誉满海内外，人们称它为“合浦珠”。当地百姓都以采珠为生，以此向邻郡交趾换取粮食。采珠的收益很高，一些官吏就乘机贪赃枉法，巧立名目盘剥珠民。为了捞到更多的油水，他们不顾珠蚌的生长规律，一味地叫珠民去捕捞。结果，珠蚌逐渐迁移到邻近的交趾郡内，在合浦能捕捞到的越来越少了。合浦沿海的渔民向来靠采珠为生，很少有人种植稻米。采珠多，收入高，买粮食花些钱不在乎。如今产珠少，收入大量减少，渔民们连买粮食的钱都没有，不少人因此而饿死。汉顺帝刘保继位后，派了一个名叫孟尝的人当合浦太守。孟尝到任后，很快找出了当地渔民没有饭吃的原因；下令革除弊端，废除盘剥的非法规定，并不准渔民滥捕乱采，以便保护珠蚌的资源。不到一年，珠蚌又繁衍起来，合浦又成了盛产珍珠的地方。
