推心置腹的典故

西汉未年，王莽篡政，引起天下大乱，各地农民纷纷起义，群雄讨莽。公元23年初，刘玄被立为天子，刘秀任偏将军。王莽多次派兵攻打刘玄。在这些战斗中，刘秀屡立战功，被刘玄封为“萧王”。同时，刘秀与另一草莽英雄王郎也曾在今河北省中南部的滹沱河、滏阳河流城征战多年。打了不少胜仗。公元24年秋，刘秀率兵攻打民起义军于邬（今河北束鹿县东南），大破之，封降兵渠帅为列候。但降者并不很放心，担心刘秀是否出于真意。刘秀获悉这一情况后，为使其放心，便采用安抚之计，下令降者各归其本部统领其原来的兵马，刘秀本人则轻骑巡行各部，无丝毫戒备之意。这样一来，降者都信以为真了，只听他们经常三三两两地在一起低语：“萧王推已之红心，置他人之腹中，我们还担心什么？还不为他打天下，出力吗。”《后汉书·光武皇帝本纪》里的原话是：“萧王推赤心置人腹中，安得不报死乎！”

后人根据这段历史，将“推赤心置人腹中”句概括为“推心腹”成语，以喻真心待人之意。
