春秋时期，晋国和楚国为争夺霸权相互进行战争，郑国处于他们之间，他依附晋国，楚国就派兵征服它。晋国听说楚国出兵就派荀林父、士会、先榖等率军讨伐楚国，听到他们已经结盟，士会同意荀林父知难而退的做法，先榖不同意造成兵败。
